The Rays traveled to Dunedin for a duel between two lively left handed starters in Blake Snell and the former LA Dodger, Hyun-Jin Ryu. This #BumpDay consisted of a matchup against the Blue Jays featuring their 4 young studs in Bo Bichette, Cavan Biggio, Lourdes Gurriel Jr, and Vladimir Guerrero Jr at the front of the Toronto lineup this afternoon. Kevin Cash shook up the Tampa lineup a little bit today as he had Tsutsugo in the leadoff spot and the shortstop, Willy Adames hitting in the cleanup spot. Ryu shutout the Rays’ offense through 4 1/3 innings as he gave up only 3 baserunners and collected 4 strikeouts. The Toronto ace pitched to contact today as he didn’t allow a base on balls. The Rays finally got on the board in the top of the 9th inning as the 26 year old, Joey Roach, singled to score Michael Smith. Dalton Kelly and Brett Sullivan would also record RBIs as the minor leaguers kept this game alive for a little bit in the final frame.
Blake Snell had a very rough outing in today’s game as he exited after just 1/3rd of an inning. He had very wild command as he threw only 6 strikes out of his 22 pitches and walked 4 Toronto hitters including a bases loaded walk that scored the first Blue Jays’ run. Trevor Richards came in after Snell and the Jays immediately tacked on 4 more runs after a Danny Jansen grand slam. The 5-run bottom of the 1st ended with only one Toronto hit and 5 free bases. Richards finished his day after throwing 2 2/3 innings giving up 3 hits and one run on the homerun. He also punched out 3 hitters and walked only one, so it wasn’t a bad appearance for Richards. Jalen Beeks stayed hot as he threw 2 2/3 scoreless innings and gave up just one hit on a double credited to Billy McKinney. Andrew Kittredge struggled in his outing as he gave up 3 runs on a homerun by the Blue Jays’ minor leaguer, Riley Adams, in the 7th inning. Rays’ pitching totaled 8 walks and 1 HBP which is not a recipe for a successful day on the diamond. Despite the late rally, they would drop this Grapefruit League contest to the Canadian club by a final score of 8-3.
