Rays Player Spotlight: Brian O’Grady

Brian O’Grady is an outfielder/1st Baseman from Warminster Township, Pennsylvania. He stood out as a 2-sport athlete at Archbishop Wood High School. He got a chance to play baseball at the next level at Rutgers University.

O’Grady had a solid freshman campaign as he walked more times than he struck out and he carried a .386 OBP. His sophomore season was even more impressive though as he slashed .328 and finished with 5 HRs in 54 games.

Brian O’Grady got drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the 8th round of the 2014 MLB draft after his stellar season at Rutgers. His power numbers kept trending up throughout his journey through the minor leagues. His best season was in 2018 when he played for the Reds’ Triple-A affiliate, Louisville Bats. O’Grady hit .280 with 14 HRs and 59 RBIs that year which led to his promotion the next year.

The Reds called O’Grady up to the big leagues in 2019. He played in 28 Major League games and hit .190 with 2 long balls. The Rays acquired Brian O’Grady after the Reds DFA’d (Designated For Assignment) him during the 2019 offseason. He hit .348 with 2 HRs in 14 Spring Training contests this year. Rays fans should be excited about this young stud if he gets an opportunity to play with the big league club this season.
